How To Install Underbody Lighting Kits?
So, you want to increase the look of your ride and think that an underbody lighting kit is the best way to go about it. These light kits are certainly a great way to make your ride stand out. Underbody lights can give you a great custom glow that will make your ride stand out in any crowd.
However, if you're going to attempt the installation on your own, you'll need a few tools and a few pointers, as well. While the installation is relatively simple and straightforward, there are a few things you'll need to bear in mind to stay safe and get your lights installed as quickly as possible.
First, let's talk tools. You're going to need quite a few of them. Additionally, if you have no experience with electrical systems, it is highly recommended that you have either experienced help or hand the entire project over to someone with more knowhow.
Required Tools:
- Electric drill
- Selection of drill bits (suitable for drilling into metal)
- Several screwdrivers (both Phillips and flat head screwdrivers in an assortment of lengths)
- Wire strippers/crimpers
- Flashlight
- Electrical tape
- Butt connectors or heat shrink tubing.
- Pencil/marker/chalk
- Floor jack and jack stands
- Voltmeter/circuit tester
Now that you've got your tools gathered, it's time to move on with the actual installation.
Installation Steps:
- Find a flat location where you can jack up the car. Ensure that the area is dry and clean, as well.
- Disconnect your battery. While many people may tell you to simple remove the negative battery cable, it is safer to disconnect both the negative side and the positive side. If your vehicle is equipped with an anti-theft radio system, you'll need to make sure that you have the radio code to turn it back on. You must disconnect your battery to help ensure your safety while working with electrical components. Additionally, you can now jack up the vehicle. It is safer to use jack stands under the car, rather than relying solely on the jack to hold up your vehicle.
- Determine the best mounting location for your lights. Ensure that the area is free of electrical wires, brake lines and fuel lines. Follow the included instructions and test fit your lights in your chosen location. If the location works, mark the mounting points with your pencil, marker or piece of chalk
- Carefully drill into the underbody until you have a hole large enough to accommodate the screws that came with your kit(Or use high quality self tapping screws meant for steel framing, saves having to pre-drill holes). You can actually go ahead and start the screws now. Before you do, apply a small amount of silicone to the flat side of the screw heads, thread them through the mounting brackets and gently hand tighten them into the holes. Do not thread them all the way in just yet.
- Ensure that you have the wires facing towards the front of your car and hang the light fixture from the mounting brackets. Install any other light tubes in the same manner. Once all the tubes have been installed, individually tighten each screw until the mounting bracket and screw mount flush under the vehicle.
- Now it's time to mount the transformer(if included with your neon kit, some kits have the transformers individually built into to the neon tubes, and led underbody kits don't have transformers). You can do this under the hood, close to the battery, or inside your vehicle. Follow the directions to mount your neon transformer, but make sure that you only drill in an area where you will not damage anything. Once the lighting transformer is in place, connect it to the circuit shown in your instructions.
- Connect any wires. If you need to cut wires and splice into them, you should peel back the outer covering, twist the end of the wire and solder it together with the end of the opposite wire. If you choose not to solder and use a heat shrink tube, butt connectors work well. Simply twist the end of the wire, insert it into the butt connector and crimp firmly.
- Connect the power line for the transformer to the positive battery cable (you can do this by placing the lead inside the cable connection at the battery). Your inline fuse should be very close to the connection, not more than 1 ½ feet away. This ensures safety for your system. The ground wire should be firmly grounded to your vehicle's chassis, ensuring complete contact with the metal.
- Mount the on/off automotive toggle switch in an easily accessible location inside your vehicle. This can be on the dash, below the dash near the driver door or anywhere else convenient. Run the wiring through the gap (grommet) behind the dash and into the engine compartment.
- Ensure that all of your wires are connected. If you splice into any wires (make sure it's not the headlight line), test it with your voltmeter to ensure that there is 12v of available power.
All in all, underbody lighting is awesome. They are a relatively inexpensive way to personalize your vehicle and stand out from the crowd. Browse Urban Neon Car Lights underglow lighting to see just how cool it is! You can also check out our selection of 12 volt interior lighting!
